Wry Neck
What is it?
A patient suffering with wry neck will often present with pain and limited range of movement in their neck. The patient may also present with a “fixed neck deformity”, this means the neck is fixed into a rotated and/or bent position, this can be due to muscle spasm and/or for pain relief.
* People may also suffer with Congenital Wry neck that presents at birth, this article will only explain Acute Wry neck or Wry neck with a sudden onset. Please note that both Congenital and Acute Wry neck can be treated by our Physiotherapists.
What are the symptoms?
The patient can present with neck and shoulder pain that can radiate down in between the shoulder blades.
The patient may be unable to turn the head.
The patient may have a “fixed neck deformity”, usually with the head twisted and/or to one side.
The patient may present with muscle spasm within the neck.
What are the causes?
Although the cause of Wry neck is unknown, there are a few recognised predisposing factors. These are the following:
A quick/sudden and vigorous neck movement
Prolonged awkward positioning of the neck ie. Sleeping in an awkward position.
A sporting injury where there is trauma to the neck.
Poor posture.

What types of treatment can we offer?
Manual Mobilisation Therapy - These are passive movements that the therapist applies to the joints in and around the neck to increase range of movement, reduce stiffness and pain.
Manipulation Therapy - Can help to release joints that have become stiff and dysfunctional.
Soft tissue Massage Therapy- Can reduce muscle tension, improve tissue mobility, enhance muscle contraction and desensitise any painful and overactive areas.
Acupuncture - Can stimulate the body's natural healing response, release pain-killing endorphins and improve functioning of the hormonal system
Electrotherapy – Can speed up and optimise the healing process.
Exercise and Rehabilitation – Wry neck can often cause a muscle imbalance within the neck. We can provide you with a tailored exercise programme to target the right areas in order for you to regain the strength and range of movement you had prior to the incident.
Ergonomic and Postural advise – Can help you manage your day to day activities whether you’re sitting at a desk, performing leisure activities or trying to get a good night’s sleep.
